Awra Amba is an unusual and remarkable place situated in a rural, food insecure region of Ethiopia. The community has developed around goals of equality, hard work and non-violence. In a global world, searching for models of equality and development Awra Amba provides a refreshing example, one without external aid. This film follows a young woman who is trying to become a member of this unique place, after a life of domestic violence. But first, she has to fulfill a long list of criteria set by the community.

THORNS AND SILK tells four unusual stories from the West Bank, featuring women who work in male-dominated jobs. All four have the courage to break traditional rules, but not without challenges.

We dip into the life of a wedding filmmaker, who films women-only weddings in the most conservative part of the West Bank; hear the stories of a female taxi driver who works in the Israeli parts of Jerusalem; discover a young, dreamy police trainee at the national police academy and learn about the hardships in occupied Nablus from a mother who takes on male roles to keep her family toilet paper factory going.
